Aix en Provence is a city in the south of France. It is about 20 miles from the port of Marseille in the Provence region. The city overlooks the nearby river Arc. The town has the best of both worlds by being in the countryside but only a short drive to the coast. The town is in two parts the new and the more interesting old part. The old town has a mixture of wide streets with old mansions some dating back to the 16th century. There are several squares with fountains. The Place d`Albertas is a pleasant square flanked by 18th century houses. The hôtel de ville, with its clock tower looks on
to a another square the Place de la Mairie.

Aix has several museums and galleries it holds a antique market on Tues, Thurs & Sat at Place Verdun. There is also a farmers market with local produce most days. The town is also famous for its thermal springs. It can be difficult to park in the old town. You are best parking in the under ground car parks a 10 min walk from the centre. When we visited Aix we stayed in a Gite about 10 miles out of the town. It was ideal for visiting the town and the small villages in the area. It is also great to sit by your own pool with a cold drink after a long day in the hot sun. There are plenty of Gites in the region to pick from like the one in the photo. This large independent villa is spacious and ideal for a family holiday with its large garden and private swimming pool. It is situated in a quiet residential area only 0.6 miles (1km) from Lambesc, a lively Provencal village with good facilities, restaurants and cafés. At only 15.5 miles (25km) from Aix-en-Provence, one can enjoy marvellous days out discovering the museums of Cézanne, the Cours Mirabeau and the Rotonde, which leads to small lanes lined with antique shops and restaurants.
