Avignon is located on the left bank of the Rhône about 55 miles from Marseille.

The town is a mixture of old and new it has some very nice parks and gardens.

The town is best known for its bridge the Bridge of Avignon or "Pont d'Avignon.

Made famous in the song. The bridge was used as link between the residences of the cardinals and the Popes' Palace inside the city walls.

The Popes' Palace

The Palais des Papes is a gothic style building more a fortress than of a palace.

You have to go inside to get to get a sense of the richness of the papal court.

There is a pedestrian area with several streets full of shops.

You will find a large variety of well stocked luxury shops.

Plus ceramics and pottery and other specialities of the Provence region.

There is a flea market on Sunday mornings and a farmers market on Saturday between May and October.

I was told they also have a Christmas Market 2 to 30 December

The town has a wide selection of restaurants you should be able to find one to suit your tastes. A local Map of the town

If you have the energy climb up the steep road to the park at Rocher des Doms on Montee du Moulin off place du Palais. it is worth for the view
