Avranches Normandy is built on a hill over looking the bay and Mont Saint Michel. We had drove past the town earlier in the week on our way to Alligator Bay and marked it down for a visit. We picked the only dull day during our 14 days in Normandy. The Castle at Avranches
It is quite a steep road to the centre of the town. There is a large car park on your left plus toilets and a tourist office. The car park was full so we headed for the castle and parked there it is only a short walk to the centre. The first castle was built here in the year 950 the present castle walls offer a great view of the town and the bay. During the Second World War the town was a key defensive position for the German army. General Patton 4th armoured division captured the town which lead to the fall of the rest of Normandy. The town centre is compact and easy to walk round. There is a nice selection of shops and restaurants. A local Map of the town. If you like your history try the museum Scriptorial d'Avranches it is about half a mile from the centre at Place d Estouteville.
