The Camargue is in the south of France, between the Mediterranean and the River Rhône delta It is a wildlife national park very flat and a mixture of marshland and water. Salt plains cover the south eastern corner and in the center is a large nature reserve. There are large areas that grow rice and even a few vineyards

The area is home to more than 400 species of birds, and one of the few places in Europe you will see the greater flamingo. The area is most famous for its horses which roam over the Camargue. You can see them in the photos below along with the specialised breed of bull. They are smaller that most modern breeds of bull and are raised for their distinctive meat

The best time to visit is in the spring and autumn it gets very hot in the summer, mosquitoes can be a problem. There are several ways to see the area. You can park your car and walk you can hire a mountain bike.Or take a guided tour on the white Camargue horses. There are also jeep 4x4 tours from Ste. Maries-de-la-Mer.A local map of the area
