Places to visit in Colmar

The old town of Colmar is in the Alsace region of France. The town is about 40 miles from Strasbourg it is in the middle of the Alsatian wine growing area. The town enjoys a sunny climate and is one of the driest places in France. Which makes it ideal for producing wine. The town is on the banks of the Lauch river and is connected to the Rhine river. By the Logelbach canal. The old centre has brightly painted half timber houses and narrow winding lanes. The houses are wider at the top than the bottom. The centre is traffic free it has several plazas joined together by short streets. That take you around the old buildings and churches You can see examples in the photos.

The Collégiale St-Martin is worth a look at its stained glass windows and coloured stones.

You can see it in the photo below. The area has a square with lots of cafes where you can sit and enjoy a coffee.

The museum Bartholdi is also worth a visit you can see the work of the nineteenth-century sculptor. He was responsible for New York's Statue of Liberty,

The tourist office have details on guided walking tours around the town you can also go on boat trips.

If you have a car it is ideal for touring the Route de Vin. A 100 mile trip through the wine villages.

If you want to stay in the town there is a campsite about a mile from the centre on Route de Neuf-Brisach.
