Doullens
Custom Search
We arrived in the old town of Doullens quite by chance
we had been visiting the battlefields of the Somme. The
car sat nav took us here on the way back to Inxent our
holiday base.
Doullens is about 20 miles from the city of Amiens
in the Picardy region. The town is built on the banks of the river
Authie. The town has a lot of WWl history it was a Casualty Clearing
Station. You can visit the town hall free entrance and see the room and table
where General Foch was given overall command of the allied forces on the
western front. The town was bombed and occupied by the Germans in the second
World War.
The centre of Doullens
The river Authie and a local Restaurant
When we arrived in the town we parked in the main car park right next to the
ruins of Saint-Pierre, the 13th century church. There is also a market there once a week.
Most of the shopping streets feed off the car park there is a good mix of shops
and cafe bars. We saw a sign for the promenade which turned out to be a nice walkway
on the banks of the river Authie through a park.
The belfry and the town hall
You can see the 17th century belfry in the photo there is a Tourist office in the building
The ruins of Saint-Pierre, the 13th century church.
