Fontenay de comte

The first time we saw the french town of Fontenay was late at night.
I had drove around the town three times trying to find a sign post for the small village we were renting a farmhouse at.
We did manage to find the farmhouse two hours later some 6 miles outside the town.

Fontenay is a very old market town in the vendee region of France.

Every saturday they hold a street market you can see it in the above picture.

It goes all the way down the hill to the river vendee and some of the side street as well.

The market sells a wide range of goods we bought a handmade basket at a very reasonable price.

We stocked up on fresh vegetables,chicken and cheese all at lower prices than UK.

All this and free parking the car park we used is at the top of the hill see photo.

If you want more shopping take the first right turn at the top of hill.

There is a very large hypermarket, garden centre and the usual supermarket stores plus cheap petrol and diesel.

The prices here are much cheaper than the channel ports less tourist.

Things to do take the walking tour and see a thousand years of history half timbered houses the Notre Dame church climb the bell tower.

Fontenay is a good base to tour the Vendee region.

It is about 50 miles to the coast. Or you can visit the small French villages in the area
