Moncontour in Brittany photos and travel guide to our visit to this hill village. The village is about about 50 miles from the Port of Saint Malo The sign for Moncontour
Moncontour is a hill village in Brittany we made a short detour on our way from the ferry at St Malo to Saint Yvi. It was only 10 extra miles from our route. When you reach Moncnotour you can easily miss the old part of the village. You have to make a sharp left turn up a hill to the centre opposite the red car in the photo. We spent an hour walking round the village before calling in the bread shop for a cake to have with our coffee. Then it was back on the road just 60 miles to the Finistere coast and our rented gite in the village of Saint yvi Moncontour

Local information on the town from Valerie a Lady who was a resident of MoncontourMoncontour is a Frenchman's memory of old France. It is probably the smallest walled city in France and you can enjoy a beer or a coffee in the old-fashioned bars in the main square and remember to say 'bonjour' to the locals when you go in!! Whilst there, go inside the church and look at the stained glass windows. They are quite lovely. It's a good idea to go to the Tourist Office in the other square for a list of upcoming events and take in the little museum whilst there. If you book a guided tour you will learn about Moncontour during the Revolution. Your guide will also tell you about Moncontour being occupied by the Germans during WW2 and their very active Resistance run by women and young boys. The men had been taken to Germany by force when the Germans arrived. The restaurants in general are very good, but for a special treat, eat at 'Le Chaudron Magique' and ask Nadine, the owner, if you can wear Medieval dress to dine!! Don't forget to have your pictures taken! Every Tuesday evening in July and August there is live music in the Main Square, and if you are there in August don't miss the 'Fete Medieval' with jousting, fire-eating, and all sorts of medieval activities. Have fun. A bientot!!
