The town of Saumur in the Loire region of France

Saumur is on the banks of the Loire river between the towns of Angers and Tours.

The top picture shows the bridge over the Loire to the town. Saumur is called the white city because of the pale tuffeau stone that a lot of the town is built with. So much stone was excavated to build castles. palaces. bridges that it left a network of tunnels. The miles of tunnels were used to house the work force see my page on Rochemenier.

A 14th century Chateau de Saumur over looks the town this as been a palace and a prison. During its time as a prison the Marquis de Sade was kept there it is now two museum a furniture and the history of the horse.

In the town is the world famous Cadre Noir equestrian academy.

We found parking easy and cheap the old half timbered houses and narrow street were full of art galleries antique shops and gift shops.

A wide choice of restaurant and street cafes and modern shopping malls. There are also the usual edge of town hypermarkets.

Well worth a look is the Military Cavalry school which as the largest tank collection in Europe. About 150 working armoured vehicles form the first world war to the gulf war.

The Caves Louis de Grenelle wine tasting tour is worth a visit.We enjoyed the tour it was interesting to learn about how wine is made.The address is 839 rue Marceau 49415 Saumur

We stayed in a gite in a small village a few miles from Saumur. This is a good way to live like the locals and enjoy the French lifestyle. It is also good value more so if several of you go together if you would like to stay in a Gite try here Gites to rent

These two 14th century stone cottages with exposed stone and beams are set in the grounds of the impressive Château Salvert in the heart of the Loire Valley. Throughout they has been furnished to a good standard by the owners, who have been resident here for many generations.

The woodlands of the château grounds are home to a profusion of wildlife, including wild boar which can occasionally be seen from the window.

Each has a private terrace and garden for outdoor dining. A swimming pool, shared with the owners and guests, has a delightful barn style pool house with a glorious view. The château town of Saumur lies 10 minutes to the south, with a chance to sample some of the world famous sparkling wine of the same name at one of the many fine restaurants which can be found here.
