Tips on shopping the main difference between the Uk and France.

Is the openning hours unlike the Uk most French shops close at 12 midday till 2 pm.

Even the large supermarkets close with a few exception in the larger cities. In the Uk supermarkets stay open late some 24 hours. In France most are shut by 9pm earlier on a Saturday.

If you arrive in France on a Saturday to stay in a rented gite.

You need to get some shopping in right away the supermarkets shut at 7pm on Saturday. Very few open on a Sunday an odd one might open till 1pm. Quite a few are shut on Monday as well so you could be unlucky depending on the area you are staying.

Auchan hypermarkets offer a vast range of goods both food and everything you would want to buy even cars.

We found them to be good value. The photo at the bottom of the page shows one of the beer and wine warehouse there are quite a lot around the Calais area but we found them no cheaper than the hypermarkets if you shopped outside of the tourist bits of Calais

The supermarkets are very good you will need a 1 euro coin for the trolley.

The range of food is very good the fresh food all taste better than the Uk. The cheese, meat,and pate the fresh vegetables the bread. Is one of the main reasons for going to France the only thing we found not as good was the milk. A thing to remember when you get to the checkout they do not provide any bags for your shopping. So take some with you, it is an green regulation we will probably get in Uk.

Try P&O for your Dover to Calais ferry
