Sacre Coeur Cathedral
The area is one of the most beautiful parts of Paris. The “artist’s square” and Sacre Coeur cathedral are the biggest attractions in this area. Both are located atop a rather large hill on the edge of Paris.
There is the option to ride up to the top of the hill on the funicular, but I recommend walking up. The hill is quite a climb, but it’s a great way to get some exercise and to see some of the quaint little neighborhoods in this part of Paris.
The climb takes about ten minutes and there is a staircase for the steepest parts. Once you’ve reached the top, you can relax on the steps of Sacre Coeur and listen to the street musicians while taking in the best views of Paris.
Sacre Coeur is on the way to the artist’s square, so I suggest visiting the cathedral first. The building itself is spectacular, but when you go inside you will be enveloped by the tranquility of a great spiritual landmark.
When you leave the church, just continue up the hill (a short walk, not like the steep climb you did before) to the artist’s square. Although the square is often packed with tourists, it’s well worth a visit.
There are tons of artists painting and selling their works. You’ll also find some great cafes and crepe shops in this area.
These spots offer pricey, but also tasty and authentic French cuisine. After you’ve had a bite to eat, I suggest checking out the Dali museum.
The museum is located (appropriately) just outside of the artist’s square. This quaint museum is a nice place to view some of Dali’s lesser known works, like sketches and studies. The museum is small and manageable, so it won’t strain your brain after your big lunch!
All in all, Montmartre is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon in Paris.
