Mont-St-Michel a village off the coast of Normandy

Mont-St-Michel is a rocky island on the Normandy coast.
It rises out of a wide sandy bay with one of highest tide in Europe.
The tides can vary as much as 15m and the car park can be under water so time your visit.Just to update you since our first visit a lot
of work as been done to stop the flooding of the car park.
Le Mont-St-Michel
At the top of the Mont is the gothic fortress abbey. The cobble streets up to the Abbey are lined with half timbered buildings.There are a lot of steps to the abbey at the top it can be tiring on a hot day so you are better going early.
The main street contain the usual tourist shops, cafes and expensive restaurants. It gets very crowded in the summer months.
I found walking along the ramparts less busy and the sea views are spectacular.

Les Terrasses Poulard Hotel Le Mont-Saint-Michel
This hotel is full of character. Being an old building, it only has the inconvenience of having small rooms, which is highly compensated for by the excellent location and quality of the restaurant.
Please note that neither coaches nor cars have access through the gates of Mont Saint Michel. Guests will, therefore, need to park in the car park nearest to the entrance when the tide is low.
Alternatively, you have the option to park further away. You will have a slightly longer walk but the breathtaking view will be worth it. This is a charming, traditional building. The hotel is ideally located on Mont Saint Michel, a five minute walk uphill from the entrance gate.
The bay is home to many rare sea plants. The nearby island of Tombelaine is a bird reserve.
Although it dose get very busy it is a good day out and well worth a visit if you are in the area.
