The old town of Arras photos and guide places to stay
Arras is the capital of the Pas de Calais region. Its two large town squares were destroyed in WW1. They were originally created 800 years ago.
The town is very busy but we found it easy to park in one of the squares. There is a lot to see in the centre the flemish style houses and shops.
Underneath is a vast network of tunnels. Which were used by the British army in WW1 but date back to the French Revolution.
The view from the town hall belfry of the town is just stunning. You can see on a clear day Vimy ridge with the Canadian Monument.
Things to see
1. Visit the Citadel of Arras: Located in the center of the city, the Citadel of Arras is a historic fortification that was built in the 17th century. It is now open to the public, and visitors can explore the ramparts and enjoy stunning views of the city from its heights.
2. Tour the Town Hall: Located in the heart of the city, the Town Hall of Arras is one of the most impressive buildings in the area. It is an 18th century building that was constructed in the Baroque style, and visitors can admire the elaborate façade and take a guided tour of the interior.
3. Explore Place des Héros: Located in the center of Arras, Place des Héros is a public square that is surrounded by some of the citys most important monuments. It is home to the Grand Place, the Town Hall, and the impressive Belfry of Arras, which is a World Heritage Site.
4. Visit the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial: Located about 8 kilometers from Arras, the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial is a memorial site that commemorates the sacrifices of the Canadian soldiers who fought in the Battle of the Somme. It is a somber yet powerful reminder of the horrors of war.
5. Take a Tour of the Catacombs of Arras: Located beneath the streets of the city, the Catacombs of Arras are a network of underground tunnels and chambers that were built in the 18th century. They are now open to the public, and visitors can explore the tunnels and discover the secrets of the citys past.

Saturday and Wednesday morning is market day in the squares. You need to get there early parking can be a problem.
