The cheapest way to get to Calais is by ferry from the UK. You can use the channel tunnel which is quicker but costs a lot more.
Calais is one of the busiest ferry ports in the world it has a good motorway network. The town is undergoing a lot of development shops offices.
One of the best buildings in the town is the 20th century Flemish style town hall see picture.
The bell tower bears a similarity to Big Ben there is a nice garden to the front.Just across the road is a park where a German bunker from the 1944 war as been turned into a museum.
The town is a lacemaking centre you can see lace making machinery and fine lace in the nearby musee des beaux arts et de la dentelle.

Most day trippers head out of Calais on the ring road which leads to the vast shopping mall complex at Cite Europe. The centre shops opens at 10am but you want get there at 9am. The car park although large fills very quickly, you can get a very good continental breakfast 5e inside while you wait for the shops to open.
The shops offer a wide selection of products but there prices are geared to the tourist market better prices can be had on the outskirts of town.
A wharehouse city of discount booze outlets have set up on the western side of Calais. We found fuel on cite europe car park to be cheaper for diesel and petrol.Diesel is usually about a pound a gallon cheaper than the UK petrol on our last visit was more than the UK
People miss out on the towns many interesting museums and fine restaurants. Popular restaurants a selection of places to eat out in the town.
The beach is very good for a busy Port with rows of white beach huts. A local Map of the town
