Saint Omer is one of the main towns in Northern France. We like the weekly market it is a short drive from the port of Calais.
St-Omer is a town in the Pas de Calais area of France. The town was built on marshlands in the 7th century.
It has been awarded town of art and history for the 800 year old cathedral. The cathedral took 300 years to build. You can visit the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Saint-Omer on Enclave Notre Dame. It is open more or less 9 til 5 there are guided tours in July and August
We just walked round by ourselves. Just round the corner from the Cathedral is the tourist office which has a nice tea room.
Inside, visitors will find an equally impressive interior, with towering columns, intricate stained glass windows, and stunning vaulted ceilings. The cathedral is home to a number of important religious artifacts and works of art, including an impressive collection of Flemish tapestries that date back to the 16th century.
One of the highlights of a visit to the Cathedral of Saint Omer is the chance to climb the tower and take in the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area. From the top of the tower, visitors can see the town of Saint Omer and the surrounding countryside,
Saint Omer's Public Garden is a hidden gem that should definitely not be missed. Located in the heart of the city center, this green oasis is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the town. The garden is beautifully landscaped, with winding paths that lead to various features such as a pond, a small waterfall, and a charming bridge.
You can take a leisurely stroll through the gardens, enjoying the shade of the trees, and the scent of the flowers. There are also plenty of benches where you can sit and relax, taking in the serene surroundings. The Public Garden is especially popular with families, as there is a children's playground area with a variety of equipment to suit all ages.
It's a great spot for a picnic too – there are plenty of grassy areas to lay out a blanket and enjoy a French baguette with some delicious local cheese. Additionally, the garden is home to some interesting sculptures and artwork, including a bronze statue of a woman holding a bird, which is a tribute to the town's patron saint.
Places to see the ruins of Saint Bertin`s abbey and bordering the abbey the canalised river Aa leads to Haut-Pont. Which has rows of market gardeners houses.
Sandelin a fine mansion house fully refurbished museum with 21 exhibition rooms
On the outskirts of St Omer is La Coupole museum well worth a visit.
You can see Hitler`s secret weapons the V1 and V2 and what life was like during the occupation of France.
You can see the underground tunnels where the V2 rockets were stored
Places to eat a few of the restaurants in the town
