Battle of Azincourt 1415 France

Azincourt

Azincourt has a very good Medieval Centre where you can learn all about the battle. The centre is open every day except Tuesday 10 am to 5 pm and 6 pm in summer.

Inside you can walk around the exhibits with a headset which translates for you.

There is a regular video presentation in English. The staff speak good English and were helpful.

You can park outside the building and walk round the battlefield, but it is quite a distance. We found it better to use the car and stop at the main places of interest.

Some of the exhibits in the centre you could try to lift the double handed swords.

A couple of swings and you would be tired.

The same with the mace and the ball and chain how they managed to use them in heavy armour.

If you missed the weight of the weapon would pull you over

The Battlefield at Azincourt

Azincourt battlefield 1415

The picture above show the battlefield. The battle of Azincourt was on the 25th, October 1415. Between a small English army mainly bowmen, and a large French army of heavy armoured knights.

The battlefield slopes down and narrows, it had rained for several days before.

The English army set up at the bottom of the slope and both sides.

The French had forgotten how effective the longbow was at an earlier battle of Crecy in 1346. The French charged down the slippery hill and were hit by a stream of arrows.

That brought the first row down and the rest ran into them they could not stop on the muddy slope.

A lot were crushed by there own men crashing on top of them.
