Boulogne

We visit the port several times a year it makes a good base for touring Northern France.

With its easy access to the A16 motorway and the major roads in the area

  • Boulogne is a busy cross channel port in France.

  • The harbour is right in the city centre. There are several fishing boats that operate from the port as well as the privately owned small boats.

  • The marina has 470 berths. If you head for the marina there is a good car park which is very close to the main shops.

There is a good mix of shops and cafes all in a fairly compact area of 5 to 6 streets. If you still want to shop when you leave the marina car park.

Head over the bridge onto the four lane road towards the A 16. In about 2 miles you will come to a large retail park with every retail outlet plus a Mac donalds fast food restaurant.

When you leave the sea life centre go up the rue de la Baraque de Napoleon.

Napoleon and his army were camped here in 1803 you can see the gunpowder magazine. There is a small obelisk marking the spot Napoleon awarded the first Legion d Honour on the 16th August 1804.

Other places to see are the Castle museum and you can walk around the Ramparts The view from the footpath along the wall offers great views across the city.
