Cathedral Saint Corentin de Quimper
The beauty and history of this magnificent cathedral are simply awe-inspiring. From the intricate Gothic architecture to the stunning stained glass windows, every detail is a testament to the skill and artistry of the craftsmen who built it. Whether you are a history buff or simply appreciate the beauty of religious architecture, a trip to Quimper Cathedral will not disappoint.
Furthermore, Quimper Cathedral is located in the heart of the charming city of Quimper, which is known for its old-world charm, lively markets, and excellent cuisine. You can easily spend an entire day exploring the city, shopping for souvenirs, and sampling the delicious local food. The cathedral itself is surrounded by quaint shops and cafes, making it a perfect place to relax and take in the atmosphere.
Cathedral of Saint Corentin de Quimper is in the old part of the city on the banks of the Odet river. It has been completely restored there is no charge to visit the cathedral.I liked the stained glass windows and the stone arches.
If you are hungry after walking round the city here are a few restaurants and a price guide
The windows are located throughout the cathedral's nave, transepts, choir, and chapels. They date back to the 15th century and were created by some of the most renowned artists of the time. The windows depict various religious scenes, such as the life of Christ, the lives of the saints, and scenes from the Old Testament. The colors used in the windows are simply breathtaking, with deep blues, rich reds, and vibrant greens filling the cathedral with light and color.
One of the most famous windows in the cathedral is the Saint Corentin window, located in the south transept. It was created in the 16th century and shows the life of the patron saint of Quimper. The window is a masterpiece of Gothic art and is often considered one of the most beautiful stained glass windows in France.
Visitors to Quimper Cathedral can also admire the impressive rose window located on the west facade of the cathedral. This window is made up of 85 panels and measures almost 10 meters in diameter. It illuminates the cathedral's entrance with a kaleidoscope of colors and is a true work of art.
The organ of Quimper Cathedral is one of the most impressive features of the church, both musically and visually. It is located high above the nave, and its beautiful pipes can be seen stretching up towards the ceiling. The organ is a historical masterpiece, with its origins dating back to the 18th century.
Originally built by renowned organ builder, Francois-Henri Clicquot, the organ underwent various restorations and modifications over the centuries, with the most significant one being carried out in the 19th century by the famous French organ builder, Aristide Cavaille-Coll. This restoration added some new features and expanded the organ's range of sounds, making it one of the most remarkable instruments in France.
Today, the organ boasts four manuals, 73 stops, and more than 5,000 pipes. It has an impressive sound quality, and its unique features make it a favorite among organists and music enthusiasts around the world. During the summer months, visitors can attend organ concerts at Quimper Cathedral to experience the stunning acoustics and grandeur of this magnificent instrument. Whether you are a musician or simply a lover of history and architecture, a visit to Quimper Cathedral and its organ is an unforgettable experience.
Quimper Cathedral is truly a magnificent structure that has stood the test of time, and we have no doubt that it will continue to be a popular tourist destination for years to come. Whether you are a history buff or simply someone who appreciates beautiful architecture, Quimper Cathedral is a must-see.
