The port of Dunkerque is a major international centre for bulk cargoes from all round the world.
For such a heavy industrial centre the city has some very green parts. Your first sight of Port is the large sand dunes as you come into the port.
The ferry runs from Dover and takes about 2 hours to make the crossing.
The port is in the Nord region of France it is almost in Belgium about 5 miles away.
The old dock side quays are being developed as a culture and tourist centre. With shops and cafes around the Port Museum.

The port was a simple fishing harbour in the 8th century used by pirates.
The beach and sand dunes which are so peaceful today were the scene of a bitter fight to survive.
In the second World War when the British and Allied armies were picked up right off the beach in May and June 1944.
The town was badly damaged and was the last town in France to be liberated.
It is worth a visit to the nearby Auchan super markets for low prices on fuel and tobacco.

Places to visit Le Parc Zoologique at Fort Mardyck.Which is a mile or two from the centre of Dunkerque on the D1.
The zoo is in the middle of a posh housing estate.You will need your satnav to find it.The zoo is compact and easy to walk round.We liked the seals there is an underwater viewing area.When we visited it was 4 euros to get in.
