The Pont Normandie Bridge is a true engineering marvel that connects the French towns of Le Havre and Honfleur. It stretches over the Seine River, boasting a length of 2,141 meters (7,024 feet) and a height of 214 meters (702 feet). The bridge's construction began in 1988 and was completed in 1995, costing over €430 million.
The bridge was designed by French engineer Michel Virlogeux, who also designed the famous Millau Viaduct in southern France. It features an impressive cable-stayed design with two main towers that support the road deck, which is suspended by 330 steel cables.
Today, the Pont Normandie Bridge is not only a vital transportation link but also a tourist attraction. It offers breathtaking views of the Seine estuary and the surrounding countryside, making it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Normandy.
Visitors can take guided tours of the bridge and learn about its construction and history. There are also several viewing points along the bridge, offering scenic views of the Seine River and the surrounding countryside.
The bridge is over a mile long plus a steep run to reach it and the same on the other side. With traffic travelling at 60mph I was amazed to see 4 people walking over the bridge. There was also someone on a bike he did not make it to the top and was pushing his bike. I hope he had good brakes for the downhill part you would need them to stop.
Side view of the Bridge
The photo was taken as we were travelling at 70mph so not to bad.We crossed the Pont de Normandie on our trip to Le brevdent in Normandy. We were travelling from Calais the bridge saves you about 35 miles. The toll cost 5 euros and the extra diesel to travel round the bridge about the same.So the main saving is your time. The charge is each way so we stayed on the Honfluer side mostly. We did make one extra trip over to Etretat a small seaside village. Our total tolls for the bridge were 20 euros. Plus the 180 miles from Calais cost another 16 euros each way the tolls do start to add up
The bridge offers breathtaking views of the Seine estuary and the surrounding countryside, making it a memorable experience for all who cross it.
In conclusion, the Pont Normandie Bridge is a must visit for anyone touring the Normandy region. It is an engineering marvel that offers breathtaking views of the Seine Bay and surrounding landscapes. While the toll charges may seem steep, they are worth every penny as the experience of crossing this iconic bridge is truly unforgettable.
If you plan to visit the Pont Normandie Bridge, we recommend that you allocate enough time to fully appreciate the beauty and history of this monument. Take a leisurely drive across the bridge and stop at the designated viewing areas to take in the panoramic views. Make sure to bring along your camera to capture the picturesque scenery.
Overall, the Pont Normandie Bridge is a perfect blend of engineering excellence, history, and natural beauty. Plan your visit today and experience this magnificent bridge for yourself. So, the next time you're in Normandy, don't forget to take a drive across this beautiful bridge!
