St Sever Calvados is a small rural village located in the heart of Normandy, France. It is a picturesque village surrounded by lush green countryside and is home to a rich history and culture. The village is on the D524 between Sainte Cecile Normandy and the old town of Vire
We had been to see the village of Sainte Cecile and were on our way to the town of Vire. When we came to St Sever Calvados we drove straight through but decided it was worth stopping on the way back. I am glad we did there is a main street with a mixture of local shops. Just off the main street is an old church and a large car park. Which is ideal if you want to walk round the village
The village's history dates back to the 11th century when it was founded by the Normans and was known as Saint Sever des Bois. It was the birthplace of the famous Norman poet, Robert le Diable, who wrote about the beauty of the village and its surrounding countryside in his works. In the 19th century, the village was the site of a major battle between the English and the French during the Hundred Years War.
Today, St Sever Calvados is a popular tourist destination for those looking to explore the rich history and culture of Normandy. There are a number of attractions in the village and nearby that visitors can enjoy, such as the 12th century church of Saint-Sever, the Château de Saint-Sever, the Castle of Touques, and the Museum of the Great War. The village is also home to a number of popular festivals throughout the year, such as the Musique en Fête and the Fête des Fleurs.
Nearby, visitors can also explore the beaches of Normandy, the ruins of the Château de Saint-Sauveur, and the historic port of Deauville. There are also a number of scenic hiking trails, cycling routes, and water sports activities that visitors can take part in.
Overall, St Sever Calvados is a charming village with a rich history and culture that visitors can explore and enjoy. There are plenty of attractions to explore both in the village and nearby, as well as a number of activities to take part in.
