Saumur is on the banks of the Loire river between the towns of Angers and Tours.
The top picture shows the bridge over the Loire to the town. Saumur is called the white city because of the pale tuffeau stone that a lot of the town is built with. So much stone was excavated to build castles. palaces. bridges that it left a network of tunnels. The miles of tunnels were used to house the work force see my page on Rochemenier.
The Loire Valley, known as the "Garden of France," is a picturesque region renowned for its stunning architecture, historic chateaux, and fine wines. Nestled in the heart of this region is the charming town of Saumur, a hidden gem that is often overlooked by first-time visitors to the Loire Valley.
Saumur is a town with a rich history, dating back to the Roman era. It is best known for its magnificent chateau, which towers over the town and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The chateau also houses a museum dedicated to the history of the town and the region.
Aside from the chateau, Saumur is also home to a number of other historic sites, including the Church of Saint-Pierre, which dates back to the 12th century, and the Maison de Saumur, a stunning example of Renaissance architecture. But perhaps the biggest draw of Saumur is its location in the heart of the Loire Valley, which offers visitors endless opportunities for exploration and adventure. From cycling along the Loire River to visiting some of the region's many wineries, there is something for everyone in this beautiful part of France.
Places to eat in the town
is the Chateau de Saumur, a beautiful castle that is perched on a hill overlooking the town. The castle is a great place to start your tour of Saumur and offers fantastic views of the surrounding area.
Next on the list is the Musée des Blindés, a museum dedicated to tanks and armored vehicles. The museum has an impressive collection of tanks from different eras, including World War II and the Cold War. It's a unique experience and a must-visit for anyone interested in military history.
For those interested in equestrianism, the Cadre Noir is a must-see attraction. The Cadre Noir is a national riding school and has been training horses and riders for over 200 years. Visitors can watch the horses being trained and can even take part in guided tours of the facilities.
Saumur is also home to a number of vineyards and wineries, so wine lovers will be in heaven. The Langlois-Chateau winery is a great place to start, with guided tours and tastings available.
For history buffs who still crave an adventure, the Chateau de Saumur offers a unique experience with its escape rooms. You can test your skills by solving puzzles and unlocking secrets within the castle's walls, all while learning about the castle's rich history.
Saumur is a small French town that boasts of a rich culinary tradition. From artisanal cheeses, locally grown vegetables to delectable meats, the town's cuisine is sure to leave all foodies drooling. Starting with cheese, one should try the Saumur Affiné, a hard cheese with a subtle nutty flavor, which can be enjoyed with a glass of wine.
Speaking of wine, the town is known for its sparkling wine, which is made using a unique traditional method. Make sure to visit one of the many wineries in the area to taste the famous Cremant de Loire, a dry and crisp wine that pairs well with local food.
For a traditional meal, head to one of the many bistros in Saumur's old town where you can indulge in a range of classic French dishes such as beef bourguignon, coq-au-vin, and escargot. For dessert, try the tarte-tatin, a caramelized apple tart, which is a local specialty.
If you're looking for something more casual, the town's street food scene is also worth exploring. From crepes to galettes, there are a lot of options that are sure to satisfy your hunger pangs. Overall, Saumur is a food lover's paradise, and you're sure to find something that will satiate your taste buds.
Chateau de Chambord is an enchanting destination nestled in the heart of the Loir et Cher region in France.
This architectural masterpiece, known for its distinctive French Renaissance architecture, is one of the most recognizable chateaus globally. Its iconic facade has fascinated tourists and history enthusiasts for centuries.
