The village of Rochemenier the area is known for its rolling hills and picturesque vineyards. For its rich history and culture, which dates back to the Middle Ages. The village was first mentioned in written records in 1330, though it is likely to have been around since the 10th century.
A house built into a cave
Rochemenier is in the Loire region of France near the town of Saumur. It is a village like many others in France two shops a couple of restaurants very clean and tidy. However this village is very different the houses most of the building are all built into the rockface. The rock remains relatively dry and has a average temperature of 12c.
The caves stay cool in summer and warm in winter and are low maintenace as only the front is exposed to the weather.
You can visit the muesum Village troglodyte where you can see two farms with around 20 rooms built into the rocks.
The first settlements date back to the 13 century all the rooms had to be dug out by hand .
You could sell the rock you dug out which covered
the cost of your house.
This little church is well worth a visit on a hot day it is very cool and calm inside. When we visited we were the only ones inside taped music of a choir singing starts as you enter which added to the experience. The floor is made up with ancient graveyard slabs
The village of Rochemenier has much to offer visitors, from its quaint streets and buildings to its beautiful countryside. Visitors can explore its cobbled streets, which are lined with traditional stone houses and historic churches. The village is also home to a chapel, built in the 13th century. It is dedicated to St. Jean the Baptist, and visitors can still see his remains in the chapel.
Nearby, visitors can explore the Château de Chambord, one of the most impressive castles in the Loire Valley. The castle was built in the mid-16th century and features a unique architectural style, with a blend of Renaissance and classical elements. The château is surrounded by a vast forest and gardens, and visitors can take a tour of the grounds or take part in hunting activities.
The Loire Valley is renowned for its wines, and visitors can tour several local vineyards. Rochemenier is home to the Maison des Vins, a wine cellar and tasting room where visitors can sample some of the region's finest wines. The nearby town of Blois is also home to several wineries and vineyards, and visitors can take a tour of the cellars and vineyards.
In addition to its rich history and culture, the Loire region is also home to many outdoor activities.
