Battery Todt photos of the WWll bunker in Northern France

The Battery Todt is just outside the village of Audinghen at Cap Gris Nez. It is one of the seven biggest bunkers built to protect the 380mm gun. The walls and roof of the bunker are over 3 metres thick. The battery was completed in January 1942 by Dr Fritz Todt`s organisation. The Dr Todt was an engineer who Hitler appointed in 1933 to build the first motorways in Germany. His company was in charge of 14000 sites and 300 000 workers. He was killed in a plane crash a month after the battery was opened. During the war the bunker had a farmhouse and some trees painted on the side as camouflage. Hitler visited the site as well as Rommel and Goering.

The battery was a threat to both Dover and the coast and shipping in the channel. During the three years the battery was operational the four guns fired 200 shells each.

They had periods of up to 2 months when they did not fire the most they fired was 12 shots in a day. The battery was finally captured in September 1944 after two air raids dropped 2000 tons of bombs

They did not seem to have damaged the bunker. The German troops gave up when Canadian tanks fired shells through the loopholes. You can see them in the photo the shells exploded over the explosives stored under the gun.

The photo shows the area the gun was, the cement benches behind the museum exhibits had a narrow gauge track to bring in the munitions.

The gun had a German navy crew you can see the bedrooms for the men on watch in the photo.

I would stay at the seaside village of Wissant there is a good range of accommodation BBs Hotels and a campsite.

It is only 5 miles away. Or you go the other way towards Ambleteuse which has similar accommodation.
