If you're planning a trip to the picturesque city of Arles in Provence, there are plenty of activities and sights that are sure to make your first visit memorable.
Start your visit by exploring the citys rich history and culture by visiting the Roman Arena and Amphitheater, the cryptoporticus, the Alyscamps and the Arles Museum of Antiquity. For a fun and educational experience, take a guided tour of some of the citys Roman ruins or one of the many churches.
No trip to Arles would be complete without taking in some of the citys remarkable art. Stop by the Vincent van Gogh Foundation to explore the artists work and his relationship with the city. For a glimpse into Provence history, make sure to visit the Musée Réattu, which houses artwork and artifacts from the region.
When it comes to food, Arles is known for its delicious local cuisine. Be sure to sample some of the citys classic dishes such as Bouillabaisse, Pieds et Paquets, and Aïoli. Make sure to also explore the citys many unique shops, cafes and markets, which offer everything from traditional Provençal fabrics and baskets to local cheeses and wines.
For a relaxing end to your trip, take some time to explore Arles natural beauty. Spend some time by the Rhône River, take a walk through the Camargue National Park, or head to the coast to explore the sandy beaches and stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. No matter how you choose to spend your time in Arles, your first visit is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

One of the advantages of having a car is you can visit the nearby Camargue. Just up the river from Arles the Rhône river splits into two forming the Camargue delta.
The bridge in the photo is the Langlois Bridge that featured in a painting by Van Gogh.
The painter stayed in the town in 1888 and produce a large number of paintings.
There is a marked walk taking you around all the places Van Gogh visited.
There are two more marked walks one takes you to the Roman locations,
and the other is to the medieval parts of town.
You can buy a ticket for 13.50 euros to visit the ticket including all
the monuments and Museums in the city (Roman Amphitheatre, Theatre, Baths
of Constantine, Forum Cryptoportico - temporarily closed for renovation work, St. Trophimes cloister,
the Alyscamps cemetery, the Arles Archaeological Museum, the Reattu Museum et the Arlaten Museum).
There is a good market on Wednesday and Saturday at Bvd des Lices.
