Photos of our visit to the picturesque village of Le Wast just a short drive from the coast. The village is 9 miles from Wimereux and the Cote d`Opal coast
Le Wast is a charming village in the Pas-de-Calais department of northern France. It has a long and interesting history, dating back to the 11th century. During the Hundred Years War, the village was held by the English and was a frequent target of raids by the French. In the 19th century, it was a major center of the textile industry. The village is 20 miles from Calais. The main street has terraces of white single cottages with blue shutters. We have visited the village several times it is only 3 miles from where we stay in this part of Northern France.
There is an old church just off the main street. It has a unusual portal with oriental decorations.
The village with its shuttered houses
The village has an old shop and a couple of cafes come bars. You can park right in the middle of the village. When we visited in mid week in October the cafe was closed. We had the village to ourselves luckly we had a flask of coffee with us so after a drink we set off to explore the village
It is a pleasant place to walk round and see the old houses. There is a small grey stone chateau in the main street you can see it in the last photo.
The area has woodlands and pastures small old villages.
Two rivers the Liane and Wimereux which flows to the coast add to the charm of the region.
A row of houses in the centre
Today, Le Wast is a quiet village with a population of just under 500. Its main attraction is its picturesque architecture, including a 12th century church and a 16th century château. The village also has a number of shops, restaurants, and cafes.
For those looking to explore the area, there are plenty of nearby attractions. Just outside of Le Wast is the Regional Natural Park of the Caps et Marais d'Opale, a beautiful area of wetlands and dunes. The nearby town of Boulogne-sur-Mer is home to the Nausicaa National Sea Centre, the largest aquarium in Europe. The historic town of Calais is also nearby, as is the stunning medieval castle of Montreuil-sur-Mer.
